On 16 November at the University of Gloucestershire's Oxstalls campus Mark Richardson played a punishing set in searing heat, all in the name of science as part of the Clem Burke Drumming Project.
The Clem Burke Drumming Project is based on the pursuit of knowledge through the application of scientific principles to the various art forms of drumming. It is committed to the dissemination of information leading to increased enjoyment, health and well-being of all participants involved in drumming.

Dr. Marcus Smith said: 'What we witnessed today was truly remarkable and a landmark event for the Clem Burke Drumming Project. Mark's sweat rate of 2 litres per hour is comparable to an elite endurance athlete and clearly demonstrates his body's attempt to remove excess heat from the body core. The challenge for us all now is to review the data and formulate a fluid replacement strategy for Mark that will not only enhance future drumming performances but more importantly safeguard his health.'
Principal Lecturer and Field Leader in Exercise Physiology University of Chichester, Co-founder, Clem Burke Drumming Project
Dr Chris Potter said: "As a former drummer and now physiologist, I am in awe of Mark's level of performance. Not only is he an amazing drummer (who hits the drums with such ferocity he could wake the dead), he is also an incredible athlete who has both the skill and physical fitness to perform in hostile environments that push his body to its limits. If anyone still doubts that rock drummers are really athletes in disguise, Mark's Herculean efforts will surely convince them otherwise." Lecturer and Field Leader in Exercise Physiology
Dr Steve Draper said:
"The data we saw today was very interesting - the highest oxygen uptake we have measured in a drummer and Mark lost an incredible 2kg in a single hour drumming in the heat!"

In November 2011 our very own Mark Richardson will embark on an epic adventure with current motogp star Alvaro Bautista and motorcycle legend and co-founder Randy Mamola through Zambia in an effort to raise awareness and money for an amazing organisation: Riders for Health. Riders train African health workers to ride/drive and maintain motorcycle and four wheel vehicles and provides technical support allowing people in isolated rural communities to access vital health care, often for the first time ever. You can help by donating here. Mark is paying for the cost of the trip himself so all your money will go direct to Riders. For more info on their work visit www.riders.org
